Surge Protection Devices (SPDs) are essential for safeguarding electrical equipment from damaging voltage surges. These surges, often caused by lightning strikes, electrical switching, or utility fluctuations, can severely damage sensitive electronics like computers, TVs, and appliances. SPDs work by diverting or limiting these surges, preventing them from reaching connected devices.
There are three main types of SPDs, each designed for different levels of protection:
Type 1 SPDs are installed at the main electrical panel, providing primary protection against high-energy surges, including direct lightning strikes.
Type 2 SPDs are placed at sub-distribution boards, offering intermediate protection against residual surges. Finally,
Type 3 SPDs are installed near individual devices, providing final-stage protection for sensitive electronics.
When selecting an SPD, consider factors like voltage rating, impulse current rating (Iimp), and voltage protection rating (Up). SPDs not only protect your valuable electronics but also enhance the overall safety of your electrical installation.
